One phone for everychild! This article from CNN reviews a program that qualcomm has implemented at some schools in North Carolina. The program passes out HTC smartphones to students. The students have been using the phones to collaborate on homework, and communicate with teachers and fellow students. On it’s face value this would seem like a bad idea, giving kids phones to use in school. However the teachers have said the program is a great success. Smartphones are pretty powerful devices these days and can be supported for less money than PC’s. Read the article here: CNN MONEY
Google has launched a new mobile app that is location aware , called “Google Latitude.” I’ve been playing with it on my Windows Mobile phone and can see many uses for both play and work with this app. It should be compatible with most newer Windows Mobile and Blackberry phones sold by Alltel Wireless (and other carriers). Using your phones built in GPS reciever, or assisted GPS via the cellular network, your phone will report your location back to Google and to friends that you have allowed to view your status. You will also be able to view your friends locations with either a PC or your phone. You can change your status from your phone, which integrates with Google Talk as well. If you don’t mind big brother Google from knowing where you are, then this could be a fun application, and a great way for people like me that are addicted to Facebook and Twitter to get even more social.

The 2008 REALTOR® Technology Survey found that 42 percent of brokers and associates carry a smartphone. And their ranks will only grow: 37 percent of the survey’s respondents plan to trade up or purchase one in 2009.

It has been awhile since I looked at wireless tools for real estate agents, but with the doom and gloom of the past behind them many agents I’ve been talking to are optimistic for a great 2009 and looking for tools to help them work smarter. So I decided to take a look at some of the products available for local agents. (By local I mean agents using the services of The Multiple Listing Service of Hilton Head Island.)
For the past few years users of Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices have enjoyed the convenience of using the Supra eKEY to open lockboxes and pull up real estate listings on the go. So I went to the GE Supra website to see what was new; and there to my surprise was support for the Blackberry Curve. I had to pick up the phone and call the MLS right away to verify if this information could be true!
